Other possible destinations
From Palazzolo it is relatively easy to reach many of cities
of art or areas of
natural beauty present in
Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria. All the cities and sites of
natural beauty listed below can be visited from Palazzolo
during a one day tour.
The cities of art
Below we give names of some museums and sites in some of
cities of art of Central Italy that are within a daytrip from
Palazzolo.
-
Florence (138 km)
-
Florence, the capital of Tuscany Region that was also the Italian
capital right after unification, has a long history
starting from etruscan and roman times, but most of all she
is famous due to her museums like Uffizi
and the city hall museum Palazzo
Vecchio . From Palazzolo
the easiest way is to take a train and when arriving by
train to Santa Maria Novella railwaystation you can
visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Novella and then
move towards the main Cathedral of Florence, Palazzo vecchio,
the Uffizi and
from there towards Ponte Vecchio and Boboli
Gardens, for additional information see e.g. virtual
encyclopedia of wikipedia . However, in
Palazzolo we have city guides as
well as some itineraries for a day visit in Florence.
-
Rome (160 km)
-
Rome, the eternal city is full of things to see, so we
mention here only some of them like the Colossem,
Campidoglio, St. Peters, the gallery Villa Borghese
and
of course the Vatican City and its Vatican museums that
according to us are worth of a visit, but
since all roads lead to Rome as the old roman saying goes,
it is better that you try on your own e.g. from virtual
encyclopedia like wikipedia .
Again, the best way to visit Rome from Palazzolo is to take a train
from Chiusi, since the trip take only about 1 and 1/2 hours and you
donìt have to bother about driving on the highway or in a "chaotic
traffic" and finding a "safe" parkig place.
Again, in Palazzolo we do have proposals for
short visits to Rome, that give you a possibility to choose
an itinerary suitable for your tastes.
-
Pisa (212 km)
-
Pisa is mostly known by its leaning tower that is on
Piazza dei Miracoli
, but
the city has much more to offer.
Pisa, which is one of the old "Marinare" republics, has a long
roman and naturally medieval history. The monumental map
of Pisa gives you some idea of
the city and its historically most important sites. In
Palazzolo we have some proposals for Pisa but the virtual
encyclopedia of wikipedia can be
a kind of "first aid".
Pisa can be reached from Chiusi by train (about 3 - 3 and 1/2 hours, changing
in Florence) or by car (about 2 and 1/2 hours taking A1 highway).

-
Perugia (40 km)
-
Perugia, the capital of Umbria Region, is on a hill so the
best way to see its historial centre is to walk. The
entrance to the city via the old
fortress Rocca Paolina gives an insight of its
history. You'll arrive at the Piazza Italia and on
opposite side you'll have Corso Vannucci and at
the end of this street you'll see the Cathedral of
Perugia while on the left side at the end of the street
there is Palazzo dei Priori, that houses a
museum while other ones are located in Corso Vannucci or in other
location (e.g., the Saint Domenico Museum). We have in Palazzolo
guidebooks regarding Umbria and Perugia and from them you
can create your own tour of Perugia but as before wikipedia
gives additional
information.
You can reach Perugia from Palazzolo taking a bus in Città della Pieve
(there are 2-3 trips a day, according to the day of the week and the season) or
going with your car. In this last case we advice you to park it in one of the
parking places that are sourronding the city centre (e.g., Piazza Partigiani,
Piazzale Europa).
-
Assisi (60 km)
-
Assisi which is one of the Unesco World
Heritage Centre sites in Italy is the home of St. Francis of Assisi
. The city is on a
hill and you are not allowed to enter the city centre with your car. There are
parking places around the city, but during the summer it
could be better to leave your car in St. Mary of
Angels (Santa Maria degli Angeli) and take a bus from
there. The city houses the famous two storey Basilica of
St. Francis as well as other important churches and
monuments reflecting its religious importance. The guides in
Palazzolo are at your disposal while
planning a visit to this marvellous Unesco site.
-
Orvieto (48 km)
-
Orvieto is a city that is located on a flat summit of a
volcanic tufa
. The city is old and it
has been an etruscan centre and a roman settlement. The most
important sight is its magnificent Gothic
Cathedral. The area is also known for its white wines.
-
Siena (90 km)
-
The historial centre of Siena, the capital of Tuscan
province Siena, is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site
. Siena like many
other Tuscan and Umbrian towns was settled by etruscans. The
most important sights are Cathedral , Piazza del Campo , Palazzo
Salimbeni and Palazzo Pubblico. In
Palazzolo we have guides that give more
detailed information on the city.
